These archive files can be opened on a Unix system using one of the built-in tools (varies from system to system) or else in the terminal window using the "tar" command. For example, to unpack the files needed for the proposal you should create a directory for your proposal, put the "AllegPropSpring06.tgz" file in that directory, and type:
tar -zxf AllegPropSpring06.tgz
This will unpack the files into the directory where you placed the tgz file. A similar procedure works for the thesis files, although I believe these files will automatically unpack into a new subdirectory named "AlleghenyThesis," so there is no need to create a subdirectory for this. (I usually create one anyway, just to be safe.)
